1,800-Year-Old Sculpture of Ancient Snake-Bodied Deity Revealed

Image
Archaeologists have recently uncovered an 1,800-year-old sculpture depicting an ancient hybrid deity at the site of a Roman fort in Germany. The sandstone artifact came to light during excavations in the Bad Cannstatt borough of Stuttgart, the capital and largest city of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.  In Roman times, the excavation site was home to a fort from around A.D. 100-150 where a military cavalry unit was based. An extensive civilian settlement subsequently developed in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. "This settlement took on a city-like character and was the central transportation hub of Roman southwest Germany until the end of Roman rule around A.D. 260," Dr. Andreas Thiel, an archaeologist with the Baden-Württemberg State Office for Monument Preservation (LAD) who is leading the ongoing excavations                               From:  Newsweek Visit...

Roman Settlement Unearthed in Switzerland

Image
Swiss archaeologists excavating a site in Gebenstorf discovered a sprawling Roman encampment in Canton of Aargau, Archaeology News reported, which is much larger than previously anticipated. The site itself is being eyed for residential development, leaving excavators scrambling to preserve its history. The dig, which kicked off earlier this month, was expected to turn up a relatively paltry amount of Roman artifacts. Archaeologists had thought it would be a quick and simple task to excavate all of the artifacts before redevelopment commenced, but now that’s looking increasingly unlikely. Early excavations indicated that larger structures were present, as archaeologists found wall foundations and Roman building debris among other artifacts of the era. There had been small discoveries of Roman items dating back as far as the 17th century, but it wasn’t until two investigations in 2017 and 2023 that the presence of a structure was confirmed. Rare Coins Recovered From Medieval Grave in Sweden

Image
JÖNKÖPING COUNTY, SWEDEN—According to a report in The Miami Herald, an excavation at the historic Brahe Church on the island of Visingsö off Sweden’s southern coast has uncovered two graves estimated to be 800 years old. One grave held the remains of a man thought to have been between the ages of 20 and 25 at the time of death. Archaeologist Anna Ödéen of the Jönköping County Museum said that Christian graves from this time period usually do not contain any artifacts, but some 170 silver coins minted between 1150 and 1180 were recovered. Some of these coins are unique examples, she added.                                                      From: ARCHAEOLOGY Visit Website  https://www.weaversnest.org/  for more information on Archaeology and History.                  ...

Archaeologists find ancient circle around Stonehenge that 'redefines' megalith's meaning

Image
Stonehenge is perhaps Britain's most famous historic site, a place that escapes archaeologists to this day. Constructed in several phases from around 3100 BC to 2400 BC, it is older even than the pyramid of Ancient Egypt. Despite this, little is known about the purpose Stonehenge served, how ancient Britons managed to transport and erect the mighty stones, and why it was even built in the first place. Archaeologists working at the site and similar structures nearby have for decades tried to crack the code.                                                     From:  Express Visit Website  https://www.weaversnest.org/  for more information on Archaeology and History.                                       ...
