Unknown Building Discovered in Sicily's Valley of the Temples

Image
AGRIGENTO, SICILY—The Valley of the Temples in the Sicilian city of Agrigento is one of the island’s most extraordinary sites—yet it has never been completely excavated. The Art Newspaper reports that archaeologists discovered a previously unknown building during a recent geophysical survey of more than 30,000 square feet of an area near the main temples. The ancient city of Akragas (modern Agrigento) was settled in the sixth century B.C. by colonists from Greece and became a major religious center.                                                    From:  Archaeology Visit Website  https://www.weaversnest.org/  for more information on Archaeology and History.                                         ...

Archaeologists Find Mysterious Rock Art Likely Made 2,000 Years Ago

Image
Archaeologists have identified a series of mysterious rock artworks in Brazil, some of which probably date back to around 2,000 years ago. A team with Brazil's National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) identified 16 archaeological sites in the Jalapão region, located in the east of Tocantins state, which is in the center of the country, the Ministry of Culture said in a press release. The sites feature panels with rock art, which predominantly come in the form of engravings, Rômulo Macêdo, an IPHAN archaeologist who has led recent investigations in the region, told Newsweek. Some of the sites also contain paintings made with red pigments, although these artworks are much smaller in number compared with the engravings.                                                        From:  Newsweek Visit Website...

Archaeologists Discover Burnt Porridge Inside a 5,000-Year-Old Clay Pot

Image
Researchers in Germany have found remnants of 5,000-year-old burnt porridge inside a ceramic pot. The vessel was unearthed at a Neolithic settlement known as Oldenburg LA 77. Historians say the site was once home to one of the oldest villages in the German region of Schleswig-Holstein. The team used electron microscopy to learn about the chemical composition of the food residue. Although burning the food may have ruined someone’s meal thousands of years ago, it also helped preserve the residue, allowing today’s researchers to get a better look.                                                          From:  Smithsonian Magazine Visit Website  https://www.weaversnest.org/  for more information on Archaeology and History.                      ...
